Economic Development Strategy

In 1994, Mayor Jennings established the Capitalize Albany Executive Committee to develop a collective vision for revitalizing the City of Albany, which evolved into the Capitalize Albany economic development strategy.  The goal of the Capitalize Albany strategy is to cultivate, create and develop an environment that attracts public and private investment that will materially improve the economic well being of the City of Albany and its residents. Since its inception, this effort has been instrumental in bringing more than 90 development projects, totaling more than $1 billion in new investment, to our community.

In response to changes in the local and world economy, Mayor Jennings has established a 2005 Capitalize Albany Strategic Advisory Committee to reexamine economic development goals for the City of Albany. This reassessment will take place against the backdrop of successes and challenges and current economic conditions.

The Mayor has invited a group of stakeholders from local business, educational and financial institutions to participate in a process of identifying a refined Capitalize Albany strategy that will ensure Albany's competitiveness for the next decade and beyond.

The result of the 2005 Capitalize Albany effort will be a refined vision along with an action plan for implementing the goals for the new Capitalize Albany strategy.

There are 4 primary strategic initiatives of the Capitalize Albany plan, including:

  1. Arts, Entertainment & Tourism
  2. Downtown and Riverfront Revitalization
  3. Economic Development
  4. Neighborhoods
