A Message from the Fire Chief 

Our mission is to respond to fires, provide emergency medical services, manage hazardous materials incidents and perform technical rescues on land and on the bodies of water located in the City of Albany to save life, property, and the environment. In addition, we promote fire prevention and emergency preparedness and other public safety education programs including building code enforcement.

We accomplish this mission by taking pride in our Department, promoting safety among our members, and maintaining a well equipped, highly trained and motivated force of men and women. To meet the changing needs of our community, the Albany Fire Department strives to ensure a modern and technologically advanced department that maintains a high level of readiness and invests in the professional development of all our personnel.The Albany Fire Department and its members are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to continuing the tradition of professionalism and compassion in the protection of the citizens and visitors of Albany.

Overview

The primary mission of the Albany Fire Department is to provide a range of programs designed to protect the lives and property of the inhabitants of the city of Albany from the effects of fires, sudden medical emergencies, or the exposure to dangerous conditions created by either man or nature. The Department of Fire, Emergency and Building Services is a 27 million dollar a year business. The Department is divided into two major Divisions, which are "Administrative and Operational".

Chief Robert Forezzi heads the Department. It is the Chief’s job to address the needs and demands of the public, Department personnel, the Union, Department mandates, the City, State and Federal mandates, etc. The Chief directing the Executive Deputy Chief and the three division Deputy Chiefs accomplishes this task.The Department consists of four different shifts, with each shift comprised of 16 companies, which are staffed by approximately 60 members. The full department consists of 260 members.

The Administrative Division, headed by Executive Deputy Chief Warren Abriel, is divided into three subdivisions (Supply, Repair, and Personnel) whose job it is to convey to the field units, the ways, means and duties to carry out the Department Mission. Deputy Chief  Frank Nerney heads the Training/EMS Division. This Deputy coordinates activities in "Training/EMS" with the field units. The Fire Prevention/Investigation/Codes Division investigates fires, delivers fire prevention demonstrations to the public and coordinates the City residential inspection program.
