Trash " Garbage" Collection
The City of Albany collects weekly-generated trash from residential dwellings from (4) four or fewer units located on a single property. All others, including mixed occupancy buildings, must contract for private collection. Excessive quantities of trash are subject to billing and a fine up to $325.00. Trash should be placed curbside, not before 7:00 p.m. or dusk but before 12:00 a.m. midnight, the evening prior to the designated waste collection and recycling day. Things to remember when preparing garbage for collection:
- All garbage should be containerized using heavy-duty plastic bags and/or metal or plastic containers. Such metal or plastic containers shall have a maximum volume of 50 gallons and be fitted with a lid. If you wish to dispose of a broken or damaged garbage container please label "CONTAINER BROKEN, PLEASE DISPOSE".
- Bulk items (e.g. household furniture, mattresses and toilets) may also be placed at the curb in limited quantities. Please call the Department of General Services at (518) 434-CITY (2489) at least 24 hours prior to your collection day to inform them the items are going to be placed out.
- White Goods (e.g. Air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, hot water tanks and tires). Please call the Department of General Services at (518) 434-CITY (2489) at least 24 hours prior to your collection day to inform them the items are going to be placed out. BE AWARE: Doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers prior to being put out. IT'S THE LAW!

Televisions Computer monitors All electronics should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste and electronics drop off events. | - Yardwaste consisting of bundled branches, hedge trimmings and filled biodegradable paper yardwaste bags can also be placed curbside on your collection day. Residential construction debris can be collected as long as the following is adhered to: 1. It must be neatly containerized in metal or plastic trashcans or tied in bundles. All of which, must be manageable by 1 person.
2. Loading the debris into the collection vehicles should take laborers no more than four (4) trips between the debris piles and the vehicle.
3. Building debris should be placed curbside no more than two (2) times per month on your scheduled collection day.
- Hazardous waste is not accepted curbside, however, the City of Albany sponsors 11 FREE household hazardous waste drop off events each year. To learn more about this program, please visit the Household Hazardous Waste page.
NOTE: Trashcans are not permitted to be stored in public view. Holidays All holidays will have normal trash and recycling pickup.
