ALBANY, NY – Today, Friday, August 11, at 11:00am at Bleecker Stadium, Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Recreation Commissioner Jonathan Jones will recognize the approximately 500 LIGHT Summer Youth Employment Program Participants at its annual award ceremony.
The City of Albany’s award-winning LIGHT Summer Youth Employment Program is a 30+ year old program that provides summer employment for City of Albany residents 14 to 18 years old. LIGHT stands for Learning Initiatives and Gaining Headway Together, which symbolizes the program curriculum used in Albany for five weeks each summer.
The City of Albany’s LIGHT program has been recognized nationally for introducing young residents to the labor market and helping them acquire skills and insights that can be used to improve school performance and become responsible adults.
Research from SUNY University at Albany confirms that participants in the City of Albany’s LIGHT Summer Youth Employment Program are 66% more likely to graduate from high school than non-participants.
