Councilmember Mike O'Brien grew up in Albany, New York, and has been a life-long resident here. He and his wife Diana have raised three daughters at their home at 33 Danker Ave. They are all now in their 30's and are raising their own children in the Capital District. There are five grandchildren.
Councilmember O'Brien has been the 12th Ward representative on the Common Council since January 2002. He is a 1975 graduate of Albany Law School and was employed as an attorney for 35 years working for Albany County, for New York State agencies, and as a JAG for the Army National Guard. Since retiring from active employment he has volunteered with Legal Aid of Northeast NY providing legal assistance to military veterans.
Councilmember O'Brien has been active in many community efforts even before becoming a Councilmember. He works closely with the Upper Washington Ave Neighborhood Association and with the Pinebush Neighborhood Association. He is a board member with the Rapp Road Historical Association and with the Central Ave Business Improvement District.
In the larger community beyond the 12th Ward he volunteers with the International Center of the Capital Region helping to host foreign visitors to the Capital District. He also a volunteer and board member with the Albany County Historical Association.
Currently Councilmember O'Brien chairs the Common Council’s General Services Committee and he also serves on the Finance Committee and the Law Committee. He also serves on the Golf Course Working Group looking to expand recreational opportunities there.
