Act Now Albany

Act-Now-Albany-transparentAlbany is a city defined by its history, ingenuity, and strong civic pride.  Across generations and our unique network of neighborhoods, residents have collaborated to solve challenges and move our city forward.  Act Now Albany continues that tradition by calling on all of us to come together to take action for a safer, more sustainable future.

Climate change is no longer a distant threat.  We're already seeing the impacts on our neighborhoods: longer, hotter seasons, intensifying storms, increased flooding, and worsening air pollution.  That's why the city has taken action by switching to 100% renewable energy for municipal operations, installing EV chargers across the city, and investing in innovative projects like geothermal heating at affordable housing sites - all solutions that improve quality of life for community members.

The Act Now Albany Plan will build on this progress.  While acting on climate is hard work, Albany is no stranger to that.  We're a city shaped by working people and a steady commitment to get the job done.  With individuals, businesses, and local government working together, small actions can have big impacts.  Together, we can chart a course toward a cleaner, healthier, and more just city - and show what's possible when the capital of New York becomes a capital of climate action.

Click HERE To Take Our Survey!

The City of Albany wants to understand how extreme weather events are impacting you and the resources you need to stay safe from extreme heat, extreme cold, flooding, and storms.  These events (also called "climate hazards" are becoming more frequent and more intense in our community due to climate change.

The results of this survey will feed into the City's Comprehensive Climate Vulnerability Assessment, which is currently being developed along with the Act Now Albany Climate Action Plan.  Your responses will help identify your community's most significant challenges and the resources needed during these events.

Two lucky participants will be randomly selected to win a $100 Visa gift card as a thank you for taking this short survey, which should take less than 5 minutes to complete.

The Act Now Albany Climate Advisory Group

We are establishing a Climate Advisory Group to help shape the Act Now Albany Plan.  This group's role is to guide the planning process to ensure we are incorporating best practices, leveraging existing knowledge, and ensuring equitable engagement!  The group includes a diverse range of stakeholders including representatives from businesses, schools, and community-based organizations and will periodically meet to review and provide feedback on goals, strategies, actions, and implementation steps.

Climate Ambassador Program

The City of Albany is launching a Climate Ambassadors Program to support the development of the Plan and gather community feedback.  The Program aims to

  • Raise awareness of the Climate Action Plan,
  • Grow climate literacy and knowledge among community members,
  • Be a catalyst for behavior change in support of the City of Albany's sustainability, and climate action goals.

Our team of Ambassadors reflect the diversity of ages, cultures, and backgrounds in Albany and help bring information and feedback to communities, especially the populations in Albany that are most threatened by climate change.

This project has been funded in part by the Climate Smart Communities Grant Program, Title 15 of the Environmental Protection Fund through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
