[ARCHIVED] CITY OF ALBANY PROVIDES SNOW STORM RESPONSE UPDATE

Date: February 2, 2021
Contact: Frank Zeoli

ALBANY, NY - The City of Albany Department of General Services continues to remove snow from City streets after the most recent snow event.

According to the National Weather Service, approximately 8 inches of snow has fallen in Albany since Monday afternoon.

In an effort to minimize impacts to City residents, the City of Albany will utilize posted, regularly enforced "move-over" parking regulations to clear snow from City streets. The City of Albany urges residents to comply with posted parking regulations especially over the next several days to help our DGS crews remove snow safely and efficiently.

Sidewalk Snow Removal:

It is imperative that property owners keep the sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow and ice (at least five feet, or the entire width of the sidewalk if less than five feet) for pedestrians to safely pass.

It is the responsibility of all property owners’ and/or residents to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks and accessibility ramps adjacent to their property within 24 hours of the end of a snowstorm. (City Code 323-21)

If a sidewalk is not in compliance within 24 hours of the last snowfall, the Department of General Services may clear the sidewalk of snow and ice, and the property owner will be issued a bill for the cost of removal and charged a fine.

New this season, the Department of General Services is implementing a pilot program to clear large piles of snow that accumulate from plows in crosswalks and on ADA-ramps at several major intersections to help ensure a safe method of travel during and after the storm, especially in the City’s more dense neighborhoods where walkability is even more important.

Vehicle Towing:

If your vehicle has been towed, call Albany Police Department at 518-438-4000, Center Station 518-458-5660, or South Station 518-462-8049 for information on how to retrieve your vehicle.
