[ARCHIVED] Statement from Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan Regarding Arrest of Suspect in Homicide on Hamilton Street

Contact: David Galin

ALBANY, NY – Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan has released the following statement regarding the arrest of a suspect in Friday's Homicide on Hamilton Street:

“Chief Hawkins and I have been in close communication since the Police Department responded to the scene of this homicide yesterday afternoon. As has been announced, APD engaged in a prolonged effort to bring a suspect into custody.

“I commend Chief Hawkins, his command staff, and the entire Albany Police Department for safely and effectively removing the suspect from the home they barricaded themselves in.

“Yesterday's events are a stark reminder of how important it is for the Albany Police Department to have access to every resource available to keep our community safe - including tear gas.

“As Chief Hawkins' stated, this was a 'prime example’ of a situation that called for the use of tear gas. The officers were able to safely take an individual into custody without the use of deadly force.

“The deployment of tear gas complied with the additional precautions as outlined in APD’s updated General Orders that reflect the work of our Policing Reform and Reinvention Collaborative.

“I have complete confidence in Chief Hawkins and our Albany Police Department to continue utilizing every resource available to identify those responsible for this brazen act of gun violence, arrest them, and ensure they are held accountable for their callous acts."
