Derek Johnson

Derek A. Johnson, "DJ”, is the proud son of Henry and Pat Johnson. Derek grew up in the South End of Albany where he has touched many lives in the community. Derek attended Albany Public Schools where he excelled both academically and athletically and was a star basketball player.

After graduating from Albany High School in 1986, Derek went on to attend Saint Thomas University in Miami, FL on an athletic scholarship. One year later Derek transferred to Virginia Union where he continued to prosper in the classroom and on the basketball court appearing in NCAA Division II basketball national championship games.

In 2004, Derek returned to his hometown, (Albany) yearning to utilize his "play maker" approach and style to serve his community as an educator. Derek joined the City School District of Albany (CSDA) in 1994 as a teaching assistant. After three years of service, Derek moved out of NYS but continued to have a desire to serve his community.

Derek returned to the Capital Region rejoining the CSDA as a teaching assistant yet again. As a teaching assistant, Derek refined his parental engagement skills and realized that could impact not only the students within the classroom but also the greater school community. Derek's pursuit of serving the community in a greater capacity was the impetus for him to strive to attain the position of Home School Coordinator.

Since 2009 Derek has served as a Home School Coordinator first at William S Hackett Middle School and presently at Giffen Memorial Elementary School. In the role of Home School Coordinator, Derek has served as a vital resource for a number of Albany families, as well as for educators, bridging that parent school connection that is crucial for the success of Albany students.  He is an invaluable asset for the CSDA, as well as the Albany community, whose true impact and potential has only begun to be realized for this great city.
