Albany Shines Bright with Smart Street Lighting Initiative

Energy Savings, Environmental Benefits, and Enhanced Safety

The City of Albany is proud to be a leader in energy efficiency with its participation in the State's Smart Street Lighting NY program. This initiative aims to replace 500,000 streetlights across New York with cutting-edge LED technology by 2025.

Sustainability-Street Lights

Albany took a proactive step by purchasing all 10,800 of its streetlights from National Grid in 2019, and have converted them to energy-saving LEDs. This strategic move delivers significant benefits:

  • Annual Savings: Over $3 million saved annually on energy costs.
  • Reduced Emissions: More than 2,850 metric tons of greenhouse gases prevented each year – equivalent to taking 600 cars off the road or planting nearly 47,000 trees and letting them grow for ten years!
  • Improved Visibility: LED lights provide whiter, more accurate color rendering, enhancing safety on streets and sidewalks.
  • Reduced Light Pollution: Dark-sky compliant design minimizes light pollution.

Smart Maintenance for a Brighter Future and Faster Response Times

The City has implemented a network of sensor nodes to create an interactive street lighting maintenance system. This system automates outage notifications and enables centralized, efficient control of street illumination.
