ALBANY, NY – The City of Albany is holding an exam to be an Albany Firefighter/EMT on Saturday, May 1, 2021. Interested candidates can apply here.
This is an open, competitive exam. Interested parties who meet the following qualifications should visit joinafd.org for more information including local EMT training and preparation for the Candidate Physical Agility Testing (CPAT). Firefighter salary starts at $44,608/year.
- High School diploma or equivalency diploma
- United States citizen
- Valid NYS Driver’s License
- Possession of NYS DOH EMT-B Certificate no less than five (5) weeks prior to appointment
“One of the priorities of my administration has been to create a workforce that reflects the people we serve,” said Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan. “It is imperative that we hire qualified and diverse individuals to protect our residents, as well as the thousands who visit and commute here each day. Firefighters often encounter individuals in a vulnerable state and it’s important that we continue to have trustworthy public servants joining our ranks.”

There will be test preparation sessions available via Zoom. The dates, times and how to register for these sessions will be announced soon.
A $30 non-refundable filing fee will be charged to sit for this exam. A waiver of filing fee will be allowed for income qualified individuals. View a complete list of eligibility criteria in the online job posting.
Once an application is submitted, candidates will be notified of the time and location of the exam by email. Applications must be submitted through jobs.albanyny.gov no later than 11:59 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021.
